10 Questions with Dr. Jonathan Kamerlink

Each month, we ask one of our practitioners to answer questions that offer a glimpse into their practice and their lives.

Dr. Jonathan Kamerlink is a Harvard-trained, board-certified Anesthesiologist and board-certified Pain Management Physician. He specializes in pain relief for the treatment of spinal conditions such as sciatica, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, chronic neck or low back pain and spondylolisthesis.

1. Where is your hometown?

I grew up in Chicago, Illinois – where I also received my medical degree (at Rush University).

2. What is your specialty?

I specialize in pain management. It was a long road and many years of specializing, but it was worth it. I’ve been practicing for ten years, both as an anesthesiologist and a pain specialist.

3. Tell me about becoming a pain management specialist. What is involved?

The long course of becoming an interventional pain management specialist is quite long. First, there’s four years of college, followed by four years of medical school. Then, two-year research fellowship in pain management and orthopedic spine surgery. After all that, there’s still a one-year internship, three years of anesthesia residency, and a one-year fellowship in pain management.

In total, I spent 15 years training for my practice.

4. Why did you become an interventional pain management physician?

The type of medicine I wanted to practice in my life was all about quality of life. People have a good quality of life as they mature. Most medicine is about extending time, not improving quality. I wanted to help people engage in life again. To play the sports and dance with their grandchildren.

It sounds corny, but I wanted to make the world a better place. It’s the best part of my job.

5. Why did you join Florida Spine Associates?

I believe in my fellow physicians at FSA and think, as a team, we can provide a higher level of care. By having physical therapy, pain management and surgery all at the same practice, we can provide a continuity of care that is unmatched in our area.

6. Favorite part of working at FSA?

We work well together. We can have a conversation with all our specialties – physical therapy, pain management, surgery – to ensure our patients are matched with the right specialty at the right time. In the end, creates a more holistic approach to treatment and it’s better for the patient.

7. What would the staff say about you?

I think they would say I am an easy-going person and a family-centered guy. I try to take things in stride.

8. How do you like to relax?

I love spending time with my family and friends. On the weekends, I am chasing my children, playing tennis, or spending quality time with my wife.

9. What’s your favorite movie?

Anything James Bond.

10. What is your favorite sports team?

Chicago Bulls.
